SCLEROTHERAPY

What are Spider Veins?

These are small, dilated veins seen frequently on the thighs, around knees, on the calves, and around the ankles. Spider veins are also common on the face.

Do they serve a purpose?

NO! They represent a dilation of surface vessels secondary to increased pressure in the deeper veins and years of sun exposure.

How do I know if I can be treated with Sclerotherapy?

Dr. Tomcik will first take a complete medical history to decide if whether you have any conditions (such as pregnancy, history of thrombophlebitis) that would prevent the use of this technique. He will then conduct a physical exam to gather information about the extent of your varicose leg veins and determine whether treatment is appropriate.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is a popular method of eliminating superficial telangiectasias (spider veins) in which a relatively painless solution, called a "sclerosing agent", is injected into the veins. Dr. Tomcik also uses the 532 green light laser when appropriate.

How long will it take for my veins to be treated?

Most treatment sessions last an average of 30 minutes. The number of treatments required will depend on the extent of your varicose veins, and can range from only a few up to six. Treatments are normally scheduled six weeks apart. Dr. Tomcik can generally give you an estimate after examining your areas to be treated.

How do I take care of my legs after treatments?

You will receive specific instructions. There is no "down" time after treatment, you can return to work and other activities immediately. The only restriction is on high impact activity like running and aerobics. Such activities should be avoided for approximately 2 weeks to allow the veins to heal. Patients are to wear elastic stockings to achieve the best results. They offer support, comfort, and help reduce fatigue. Patients are encouraged to wear a good quality support hose daily to aid in slowing the development of new spider veins.
